1. Thoroughly Explore Legacy Dungeons

Legacy dungeons like Stormveil Castle, Raya Lucaria Academy, and Leyndell, Royal Capital are rich with hidden Elden Ring items, including high-end defensive gear. These dungeons are intentionally designed with branching paths, illusory walls, and vertical layers.

During my first visit to Stormveil Castle, I nearly missed the Erdtree’s Favor talisman, which significantly boosts max HP and stamina. It wasn’t until I backtracked through a side path guarded by birds that I stumbled upon it. Lesson learned: explore every nook, and don’t rush to the boss.

2. Look for Hidden Walls and Secret Doors

FromSoftware has continued its tradition of using illusory walls to hide some of the most valuable items in Elden Ring. Defensive gear is often placed behind these walls, rewarding players who experiment or pay attention to environmental clues.

One of my favorite discoveries was the Crimson Amber Medallion +2, hidden behind a fake wall deep in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. If I hadn’t struck every wall out of habit, I would’ve missed it. Pro tip: use light, scan rooms, and never assume a dead end is truly a dead end.

3. Follow Enemy Behavior to Find Hidden Paths

Sometimes, watching how enemies move can reveal hidden entrances or pathways to hidden treasures. I’ve followed patrolling knights or strange beasts only to discover they were guarding or circling areas with rare Elden Ring items.

While exploring Haligtree, I noticed a Cleanrot Knight consistently walking toward a cliff. Investigating that area led me to a hidden ladder and eventually the Cleanrot Set, a highly defensive armor set with strong resistance to rot.

4. Use Elevation to Your Advantage

The verticality in Elden Ring isn’t just for dramatic views. Many secret platforms, hidden ledges, and unreachable rooftops hide powerful items, including top-tier shields and armor.

In Volcano Manor, I used a series of carefully timed jumps to descend into a lava-filled pit where I eventually found the Serpent’s Coil Shield, which has a powerful counterattack. These areas aren’t marked on the map—you have to trust your instincts and take calculated risks.

5. Talk to NPCs Until They Exhaust All Dialogue

NPCs in Elden Ring don’t just provide lore—they often hint at the locations of strong defensive gear. Some will even give you the items if you follow their questlines fully.

During my first run, I almost gave up on D’s brother’s storyline. But by following it through and making specific dialogue choices, I was eventually rewarded with Twinned Armor, which offers exceptional poise and a unique look. Patience and persistence with NPCs always pay off.

6. Track Down Optional Mini-Bosses and Dungeon Bosses

Some of the strongest defensive Elden Ring items are dropped by non-mandatory bosses. These fights are often tucked away in remote areas or hidden catacombs, but the rewards are often worth the struggle.

In a particularly tough early-game run, I took on the Tree Sentinel in Limgrave far earlier than I should have.
